Home Remedies for Bacterial Vaginosis (11 Proven Ways)
Bacterial vaginosis acts as a type of vaginal infection.
Both “good” and “bad” bacteria make themselves present in a woman’s vagina.
A woman will get this infection when the delicate divide between “good” and “bad” bacteria becomes uneven.
Some of the most common symptoms of bacterial vaginosis that a woman may experience include the following signs:
- Excessive discharge from the vagina
- Fishy odor
- Itching in the vaginal area
- Pain while urinating
Medical experts do not know why the balance between “good” and “bad” bacteria breaks.
However, they agree that some activities can increase your infection risk.
Some of these activities include the following:
- Douching
- Excessive smoking
- Having sex with more than one person
- Having sex with a new partner
As an infection, bacterial vaginosis will go away on its own more often than not.
However, if you experience any of the symptoms on these lists, treat them as soon as possible.
This article will present 11 home remedies for bacterial vaginosis.
By the time you get to the end of this article, you will know how to get rid of bacterial vaginosis.
Tea Tree Oil
This type of oil has antifungal and antibacterial compounds.
These compounds take away the germs that create the infection and will help you get rid of bacterial vaginosis.
Tea tree oil also gets rid of the awful smell that often comes with bacterial vaginosis.
To make this remedy, add the oil to a bowl of warm water and stir it for a couple of minutes.
Rinse your vaginal area with the solution. Do this once a day for four weeks.
You can also put a couple drops of tea tree oil and three cups of vinegar to your bath.
Soak in the water for 30 minutes. Do this every other day, as needed.
Yogurt
Yogurt acts as a powerful remedy for this infection.
That’s because it has lactobacillus, which gets rid of “bad” bacteria and keeps up the pH balance in your vagina.
To use this remedy, take a cotton pad and dip it in yogurt.
Put the yogurt in the vagina and leave it on the affected area for 30 minutes.
Wash afterward with warm water. Do this three times a day until your symptoms disappear.
You can also put a tampon in yogurt and insert it into your vagina for a couple of hours.
Do this twice a day until your symptoms go away.
To preserve the pH balance in your vagina, consume two cups of plain yogurt every day.
This promotes the growth of good bacteria in the vaginal area.
Apple Cider Vinegar
The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar increases the level of acidity in your vagina.
This environment allows “good” bacteria to thrive and creates a difficult place for “bad” bacteria.
Use apple cider vinegar for your bacterial vaginosis by adding a couple of cups to your bath.
Sit in the water for 20 minutes, then pat the vaginal area dry.
You should do this once a day until your symptoms disappear.
Milk
Milk has a type of bacteria called “lactobacilli”. It’s an excellent home remedy for bacterial vaginosis.
Milk will also make your immune system stronger.
To use this particular remedy, chill a glass of milk and dip a tampon in it.
Put the tampon in your vagina and remove it after a couple of hours.
Do this once a day for several days until your symptoms go away.
Another way to use milk to cure your bacterial vaginosis is to put one teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warmed milk.
Drink the turmeric powder and milk once a day until your infection begins to improve.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek acts as one of the best home remedies for bacterial vaginosis.
It not only preserves the pH level in your vagina, it also gives a boost to your immune system which increases the speed of your healing mechanisms.
To use fenugreek to cure your bacterial vaginosis, take some fenugreek seeds and soak them in two tablespoons of water overnight.
When you wake up in the morning, drink the seeds and water.
Make sure that you haven’t eaten anything when you drink this liquid.
Do this activity once a day until your condition improves considerably.
You can also take fenugreek powder and mix a teaspoon in a cup of yogurt.
Eat this mixture twice a day for a few days until your symptoms completely disappear.
Garlic
This vegetable acts as an antibiotic that combats bacterial vaginosis.
Garlic also has antifungal properties that keep the levels of “bad” bacteria in your vagina safe.
Use this great remedy by crushing a few garlic cloves. Spread the mashed garlic on the vaginal area.
Leave the garlic on the area for 20 minutes, then wash it off with warm water.
Do this once a day for a few months. You can also take a garlic clove and wrap it up in gauze.
Put this in your vagina. Since the garlic clove can cause you to get sore, don’t leave it in for more than half an hour.
Do this once a day for a few days. You can also eat your way to vaginal health by eating garlic every day.
Eat it both cooked and raw. If you hate garlic, consider ingesting garlic capsules on a daily basis.
Indian Garlic
Indian garlic also goes by the terms “margosa” or “neem”.
It contains both antifungal and antibacterial properties that reduce the levels of inflammation and itching that you experience.
It also kills the germs that cause bacterial vaginosis in the first place.
Take out a pan and heat a few Indian garlic leaves. You don’t have to add any liquid to the pan.
Let the leaves cool, then grind them into a powder.
Take two teaspoons of the powder and mix it with water to make a paste.
Put the paste in and around your vagina. Leave it there for 30 minutes, then wash it off with warm water.
Do this twice a day until your symptoms leave the area.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil contains antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties that eradicate the germs that cause the bacterial vaginosis infection.
Take coconut oil and put it on the vaginal area three times a day until the symptoms go away.
You can also put a tampon in coconut oil and insert it into your vagina.
Let the tampon stay in the vagina for a couple of hours.
When you take it out, rinse out the area with warm water.
Do this once a day for a few days.
If you want to hasten the healing process, even more, use coconut oil when you cook.
It helps your immune system work even better.
Oregano Oil
This oil has properties that can help rid your vaginal area of bacterial vaginosis.
The great thing about oregano oil is that it can keep the infection from coming back.
If you want to treat bacterial vaginosis using oregano oil, make sure you use brands that do not contain alcohol.
Take a couple drops of oregano oil and mix it with a tablespoon of olive oil.
Leave it in the vaginal area for two hours. Do this once a day until your symptoms improve.
You can also put three drops of the oil in warm water. Drink this concoction twice a day.
Do this for up to two months.
Tea Bags
Tea has something called tannins, which have astringent and antibiotic properties that reduce burning sensations, irritation, and swelling.
Put a tea bag in water for 15 minutes. Chill it in the refrigerator for a few minutes.
Relieve itching sensations by placing the bag on the vaginal area.
Do this three to four times a day for several weeks for an improved condition.
Cold Compress
Cold compresses help relieve pain, itching, and inflammation by numbing the affected vaginal area.
Cold compresses act as a great home remedy if you need immediate relief.
Take a couple of ice cubes and wrap them in a clean, warm cloth.
Put this on the vaginal area for one minute. Take a break for 60 seconds, then put it back in the area.
Repeat this cycle a couple of times.

So, 10 days ago a friend gave me oregano oil capsules to help me fight nasal congestion. I’m new to allergies, am struggling with them, and she uses oregano oil to help. The capsules have helped slightly with congestion or not at all. Who knows? HOWEVER, I’ve noticed that I haven’t had any bac vag symptoms. Usually, I’d have been forced to take 1-2 boric acid capsules in a 10 day period due to the creeping in of the odor. At first annoyance from the process of stuffing boric acid into capsules was the only reason why I decided to skip my regular treatment, but then, I realized that I haven’t had any abnormal or unsatisfactory behavior downstairs. Could it be the oregano? I hope so because popping a tiny, nearly tasteless oil capsule once a day is WAY more desirable than feeling like I’m flooding boric acid once it starts to melt. Plus, who wants her female center to literally be toxic for 36-72 hours? Sheesh. Fingers crossed on this oregano!!
